Well, shit. For someone who needed a place to crash for a couple of days, Lee sure was being stupid. He hadn’t meant to ruin the atmosphere. But after he essentially declared he never wanted to find a mate, Cain had gone really quiet. Shoulders slumped like a kicked puppy, he’d cleared the table, stuck the dishes in the dishwasher, and then told Lee he could watch some television while Cain finished his work.

Lee wasn’t surprised, though. Alphas really were mopey babies with thin skins—another reason why he rarely bothered with them.

After about two hours of television, Lee figured he’d really screwed up. He’d just have to finesse Cain into a better mood.

Padding down the hallway, he heard clacking sounds from behind one of the doors. He pushed it open to find Cain sitting at an office desk, expression serious as he tapped away on a laptop. He’d straightened his hair and his glasses, but he was still wearing a plain white T-shirt and some boxers. At Lee’s appearance, he looked up. His expression said Can I help you?

Having expected a more earnest, eager to please reaction, Lee’s usual ego-stroking tactics momentarily abandoned him. “You know, it’s usually the omegas who sulk.”

Cain’s eyebrows flicked up. Then he smiled slightly as he leaned back in his chair and steepled his fingers. “I’m not sulking. This is just a temporary retreat while I form a new plan of attack.” He wasn’t kidding.

“Is that what you’re working on there?” Lee nodded at the computer.

“No, this is some busy work from Wet Heat . . .” Cain trailed off as Lee approached the desk and picked up a stapler, clicking it several times before setting it back down. “Things always pile up around a new scent testing cycle.”

Lee took some paperclips out of jar and started lining them on the desk’s surface. “So you do more than just interview postheat omegas?”

“I do a lot more. Some of which is actually due in tomorrow, so—”

“—I won’t bother you, then,” Lee cut over Cain as he began to link the paperclips together. After a beat of silence, he glanced up.

Cain had his elbows on the desk, fingers woven together, his gaze pointed at Lee’s handiwork. Then he made eye contact. “Are you bored?”

“Excuse me?”

“I mean, half the alphas who come in mention trying to get work done at home while their omegas bounce around the room begging for attention, but—”

“I am not begging for attention,” Lee snapped. Wow, smooth.

First Cain appeared taken aback. But then a hesitant smile lit his face. “I see,” he said, like he was speaking to himself. “They weren’t really complaining about it.” He stood up.

When he came around the desk, Lee stiffened. What now?

Cain paused a foot short. And then he sighed. “Well, anyway, I do have to finish my work.”

“So I’ll just sit around doing nothing, I guess?”

They stared at each other, both clearly irritated. Lee actually had no clue why he was pushing Cain or speaking in such a bratty voice.
